The varieties of dialects on Chinese mainland

China is a multiracial，multilingual country with numerous dialects．Generally speaking，modem Chinese has seven major dialects, which are totally different from hanbridge mandarin.

The North Dialect is spoken in the central plains，and vast parts of the northeast，northwest，and southwest areas of China．This dialect also has four secondary dialects that are spoken in northeast. The Xiang dialect，also called Hunan dialect，is spoken in the greater part of Hunan province. The Hunan and Changsha dialects are the main subdialects.

The Gan dialect，also called Jiangxi dialect，is spoken throughout the Jiangxi province，in the northwest Fujiang province，the eastern part of Hunan province，and southeast part of Hubei province．The Nan2 ehang1 sub-dialect is the most widely spoken Jiangxi dialect．

The Hakka dialect，also known as Ke1 jia1 Hua4，is widely scattered but rather concentrated in the areas．Hakka is spoken in northeast region of Guangdong，the northwestern part of Fujian，Jiangxi，Hubei，Guangdong and Fujian；as well as Sichuan，Guangxi，and Taiwan．Among all the Chinese that live in Southeast Asia，most of them speak the Hakka dialect Tile primary sub-dialect is the Mei2 zhou1 dialect．

The Min dialect (northern and southern Min dialect) is spoken widely including most of Fujian province，the eastern part of Guan1 dong1，shao shan area，the western part of Leizhou Peninsula，Hainan province．the greater part of Taiwan province，the southern part of Zhejiang It is also widely dispersed throughout Southeast Asia by way of the Chinese communities in the regions．

The Yue4 dialect，also called Yue4yu3，Cantonese，Guang Fu dialect，or Bai dialect，is spoken largely in the Guangdong province，the southeast part of the Guan xi autonomous region，as well as parts of Hong Kong，Macao，and North American communities Gnang zhou dialect is the primary sub-dialect.

These seven dialects are a rough division of modern Mandarin dialects. The difference among the dialects nowadays is mainly in the sound，yet the diversity of the vocabulary is immense．Although the Jing，Jun，and Tong districts are all neighbors，Beijing people say sweet potato，while the people of Tong2 shan1 say red potato (hong2 shu3) to refer to the same thing．If you ask a young lady from Tian1 jin1，“Do you like to eat‘bai2 shu3’’she will be confused and think，‘‘How people eat a white mouse? Quite disgusting!’’(In Tian1 jin1 dialect bai2 shu3 means white mouse) So you see，there are great differences amongst the Chinese dialects in hanridge Chinese.
